Recommendations to Maximize Video Appearance and Sound
Cell phones with cameras are generally not going to provide a very good result. Video camera's are best, but the better quality digital cameras with video capability are generally going to be OK. The major drawback on less expensive cameras is the pixilation of the contents, especially when there is fast movement. The more expensive cameras can handle the fast movement without blurring or pixilation.
Lighting Is the big issue. Outdoors in the shade is probably the best. Outdoors in the sun can be good. Just be careful of shadows and glare. Don't have the sun shining directly on your subject. Indoors in a well lit area can work quite well. If the lighting is poor where you intend to shoot, you may want to create some kind of makeshift spot light.
Sound is even more difficult. Ask the audience to please keep background noise to an absolute minimum while you are introducing the contest and closing. During the contest, whooping it up is all the better. For best sound, use a lavaliere mic. You can buy them for under $30, and they will be useful for home videos or other commercial uses. Or check with your hi-tech friends.
Speak clearly and slowly and as close to the video mic as possible. You may end up with a boxy or thin sound because of the acoustics in the room, There is not much you can do about this other than change the location of your shoot or use a lavaliere.
A tripod can be a great help. If you don't own a good one, you may want to try and borrow one. If you don't use a tripod, keep movement to a minimum. Probably the number one error in shooting video is moving the camera too frequently. Movement should not take place unless absolutely necessary more than every 15 seconds.
